Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is dark blemishes leftover from inflammation of the skin. It occurs as the skin produces excess melanin to heal affected areas. While post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is most commonly caused by inflamed acne, it can also appear after allergic reactions, such as hives, and injury to the skin.Ā
